SharePoint Discovery

Site Administrator for SharePoint allows you to consolidate management of SharePoint farms, servers and sites. The Discovery Wizard within Site Administrator enables you to quickly understand your SharePoint environment by identifying all servers and sites across your network.

Add SharePoint Server Farm

To start working with the product, add a SharePoint server farm by pointing at any web front-end server. The Add Server Farm Wizard will automatically locate the other components of the farm.

Once the SharePoint farm is added, all SharePoint web applications hosted by this farm appear in the Site Administrator navigation tree. You can add any number of SharePoint farms into Site Administrator.

Discovery

Alternatively, you can add the Discovery Wizard to scan the environment for SharePoint instances. The wizard will automatically add SharePoint servers to which you have full access, and will report on all other servers.

Management Tree and Summary info

After you have added or discovered SharePoint servers, corresponding web applications appear in the management tree. The right-hand pane connects you to the SharePoint site when it is selected or shows summary information when the focus is on other tree nodes.

Reporting Overview

Site Administrator for SharePoint is a rich reporting tool for SharePoint 2003, 2007 and 2010 in both a management console and a web-based Information Portal. Reports range from a high-level enterprise view down to reports on most used documents and growth trends.

Enterprise Reports

For SharePoint 2007 and 2010 environments, Site Administrator has a web-based Information Portal that provides SharePoint Administrators an enterprise level dashboard that aggregates data across all SharePoint farms, allowing you to drill down to specific sites and sub sites. SharePoint 2003 has a similar report in the management console built on SQL Server Reporting Services.

Restructure Content

Permissions Management

Within Information Portal, SharePoint administrators can search and view, analyze and manage access rights for users across the entire farm. Administrators and site collection owners can revoke, grant, duplicate and reassign permissions (site collection owners can revoke and grant within the scope of their ownership).

Grant Permissions

For example, if you were to grant someone permissions you would simple enter their name or Active Directory group name in the dialogue box, type in the site or site collections you are granting them access to and then select the type of permissions to grant them.

User Permission Search

Information Portal enables you to see the up-to-date user permissions report, which provides a summary view of security permissions that a user or group (SharePoint or Active Directory) has for a certain site collection or site. Administrators and site collection owners can take action within this report to revoke, grant, duplicate or reassign the user’s permissions.
